Selecting a Bulb

Key Indicators:

Voltage/Wattage: Check the Volts, the Watts (or Amps if the Watts are not provided) of the bulb. You may locate the details on the bulb itself, the microscope at the back or underneath, the bulb housing or the bulb box.

Pictures: We have pictures displaying  all the bulbs we sell.

Microscope Make/Model: Each bulb has a list of microscopes that are used in it. You can use the search near the top right of  the screen by entering your make and model, such as ‘Olympus BX40’. It is by no means a complete list, and some microscopes have different versions of the same model. We do carry many of the bulbs for Leica, Leitz, Nikon, Olympus and Zeiss.  Please confirm the correct bulb by also checking with the other indicators listed below.

Bulb Make/Model: There are often many manufacturers and code numbers for each type of bulb. You can use the search near the top right of  the screen by entering the code number of the bulb you have. We have listed only some of the mode common code numbers, so you may not find a match even if we stock the correct bulb.

Categories of Microscope Bulbs:

The microscope bulbs are displayed by category in alphabetical order. They are then subdivided by Voltage then Wattage. The categories include:

Bayonet: Two small pins on the outside of the base hold the globe into place when inserting it into it’s housing. They have one or two flat contacts underneath.

Flanged: Metal circular edge sticking out around the side of the base.

Fluro: Inverted microscope fluorescent globe. Most commonly the microscope fluorescent globes come either in 50 Watt (400501, HBO 50W AC L1), 75 Watt (400751, UXL 75XE) or 100 Watt (401001, HBO 103W/2 or 401002, HBO 100W/2). We do provide these three fluorescent globes. Fluro Bulbs can often last longer than their recommended use, however the longer they exceed their hours, the more likely they will implode, shatter the rear lens and the room has to be evacuated due to mercury vapour. They also can lose brightness as they age or begin flickering, even when they have been on more than ten minutes. The 50 Watt has to be replaced after 100 hours of use, the 75 Watt 400 hours and the 100 Watt 300 hours.

Halogen: Full glass bulb with two metal pins as the base contacts.

Reflector: Glass bulb with two metal pins as the base contacts, surrounded by a metal satellite dish shaped reflector.

Screw In: Base screws into housing.

With Base: Base of globe is connected to it’s locator or housing.
